This paper explores the emergence of « potential » as a valid category of academic judgment in admissions to elite Higher education in France and Britain. Drawing on empirical data gathered at Sciences Po and Oxford University, we will investigate the effects of widening participation and diversity policies on the organisation of decision processes in elite institutions. We will also discuss what the use of “potential” in their selection process say about the virtues attached to working class students in both countries.
