Radcliffe Fellow Harith Hasan Al-Qarawee will be giving a presentation on “Iraq, Sectarian Politics, and Elections.” This first part of this presentation will focus on “sectarianism” in Iraq by explaining the inherent tension throughout the modern history of Iraq between the logic of nation-state and that of religious identity. The second part of the presentation will address the rise of sectarian politics after the US occupation and the fall of Saddam Hussain regime and will explain the processes that led to the institutionalization of sectarian identities. This presentation will also comment on current conflicts by addressing the legacy of Nouri Al-Maliki, the changing nature of Shi’a politics and the dynamics influencing Sunni identity in relation to the rise of ISIS
