The student European Club at the Harvard Kennedy School invites you to join their new task force series to address challenges facing Europe.

About

There is no doubt: Europe is in crisis. A crisis that many say goes deeper than its current economic manifestations. Some point out the widening disconnect between the European Union institutions and its people. Others are missing a sense of common purpose: The founders’ commitment to peace and prosperity has difficulties in holding together younger generations that struggle with unemployment and gloomy national and European futures. While elected officials and bureaucrats are trying to overcome the crisis, nation states are in the process of regaining prominence and the temptation to withdraw from the European project is bigger than ever. But what really is “wrong” with Europe? What is the problem or what are the problems that need to be addressed?

The European Club at HKS is setting up a task force to work on these issues over the next few weeks. Together, we will think about the roots of the European problem(s) and possible ways to tackle them:

  • What are the different interpretations of the problem and how did we end up being stuck?
  • What is the purpose of the European project and what is the gap to the current reality?
  • What threats and dangers do we need to face?
  • What values and beliefs prevent us from making progress?
  • What can hold us together as Europeans?
  • Is there such thing as a European narrative?

We want to voice as many perspectives as possible and therefore are looking for a diverse group. Both Europeans and Non-Europeans are welcome. At the end of the process, we aim to disseminate our insights in the form of a policy paper for the European Commission and newspapers article(s) and thus contribute to the debate with a unique perspective on the problem and the way forward.
