About
The Dudleian Lecture was established in 1750, making it one of Harvard's
oldest foundations. Judge Paul Dudley, who gave Harvard College a gift
of "one hundred & thirty three pounds six shillings and eight
pence," stipulated that the income received from this fund should be
used to provide the stipend for an annual "Sermon or Lecture" at the
College. Judge Dudley provided the fund so that a series of four topics
would be addressed on a rotating basis, addressing one of the following
topics per year: natural religion, revealed religion, the Romish church
[Roman Catholicism], Reformed/Presbyterian polity.
