While sustainable development becomes an urging concern of fast developing and urbanizing areas in the world, European cities offer a balanced model of development encouraged by the European Union with its policy award “Green Capitals of Europe”. This model of urban planning and multilevel governance redefines democracy at the local and transnational levels. European and national policy experts, urban and democratic theorists of Europe and America present and debate the innovative ways of Europe towards sustainability.
