About

We analyze contextual determinants of citizens' support for affirmative action policies using the example of a mandatory gender quota for company boards. Based on multilevel regression analyses for 27 European countries, we show that support for boardroom quotas varies largely between countries: citizens' endorsement of the quota is low in countries with high levels of gender equality in social and economic life, while support is higher in countries where interventionist policies are widely accepted.
