The promotion by populists and conservative movements of Europe’s "Christian identity" does not correspond to an increase in Christian religious practices in Europe. Furthermore, it runs against what the churches consider to be Christian "values". The populist electorate has de facto internalized liberal societal values (sexual freedom, for example). Through the "folklorization" of religious markers such as nativity scenes, populist leaders deprive them from any religious spirituality.
