Berezin's presentation focuses on the resurgence of extreme nationalism in contemporary Europe as one of the collateral damages of the European debt crisis and austerity measures. She develops the concept of “post-security” polity which she first introduced in her book Illiberal Politics in Neoliberal Times. She will argue that a new form of political instability is rising because traditional foundations of security, such as economic stability and cultural identity are breaking down. She will elaborate on the term “practical security” to capture the feeling and fact of security as embedded in social, economic, political and cultural institutions.
