This presentation focuses on the place of poverty-driven, semi-subsistence economies in the context of the implementation of sustainable agro-food policies and visions in the European Union. In an ethnography of informal dairy markets in post socialist Lithuania, it considers the contradictions within both the politics of rural development in Europe and the theoretical-conceptual foundations of sustainability as articulated in food studies.
