What are the prospects for social democracy in Western Europe? It is no longer a "regime" in the sense described by Bernard Manin or neo-corporatist theory, given the significant weakening of ties between political parties and trade unions. Similarly, the commonplace definition of the governmental left as "reformist" lacks relevance, as other parties have since taken up the ambition of transforming national or European frameworks. This discussion will examine social democracy through the lens of intellectual history to grasp the dynamics underpinning the evolution of
a declining political force.
