Biography

Wolfgang Merkel

Wolfgang Merkel served as director of the “Democracy and Democratization” research program at the Social Science Research Centre Berlin (WZB) and a professor of political science at the Humboldt University Berlin. He has been a member of a number of key bodies, including the prestigious Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. He is also a non-party member of the Basic Values Commission of the Executive Committee of the German Social Democratic Party (SPD).

Merkel was the recipient of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Fellowship by the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies (CES) in 1988 and 2016.
