Shao-Yu Jheng is a Ph.D. candidate in economics at Harvard University. His research topics include (rapid) industrialization and premature deindustrialization; state capacity and industrial policy; institutions; and international aid policy, covering the fields across political economy, economic history, development economics, and industrial organization. He is currently conducting several projects on comparing East Asia, Europe, and Africa's divergent development paths using both historical and experimental data.
Prior to starting graduate school, he was a pre-doctoral fellow in economics at Harvard University. Jheng holds a B.A. in foreign literature and an M.A. in economics from National Taiwan University. At the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies, Jheng chairs the Seminar on European Development in a Historical Perspective.
