Elena Militello

Biography

Elena Militello is a researcher and faculty member on criminal procedure at the University of Messina. Previously, Militello was a research specialist at the University of Luxembourg. She is also the founder and president of the non-profit organization South Working which promotes and evaluates remote working solutions as tools to revamp territories that have been suffering from brain drain for the past several decades. Militello holds a combined bachelor's and master's degree in law from Bocconi University and a Ph.D. in law and humanities from University of Insubria. She is admitted to practice law in Italy at the Milan Bar.

During her time at the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies (CES), Militello will continue research for her second book, which compares recent trends of negotiated justice in the United States and select European justice systems. The project focuses on a comparison of five legal systems regarding the pressing issue of negotiation in criminal justice cases. The work will describe the traditional and current approaches to negotiated justice in the selected countries, both in books and in action, as well as the migration of the plea-bargaining model from one side of the Atlantic to the other. Its final goal is to design evidence-based guidelines for minimum “fair trial” safeguards that should be granted in any plea-bargaining instance.
