Andrew A. Michta is Professor of National Security Affairs at the U.S. Naval War College and an adjunct fellow with the Center for Strategic and International Studies (Europe Program). He holds a Ph.D. in international relations from the Johns Hopkins University.
From 1988-2015 he was the M.W. Buckman Distinguished Professor of International Studies at Rhodes College. In 2013–2014, he was a senior fellow focusing on defense programming at the Center for European Policy Analysis in Washington, D.C. In 2011–2013, he was a senior transatlantic fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMFUS) and the founding director of the GMFUS Warsaw office. In 2009–2010, he was a senior scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington. In 2005–2009, he served as professor of national security studies and director of studies of the Senior Executive Seminar at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Germany. Previously, he was a visiting scholar at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, a public policy scholar at the Wilson Center, and a research associate at the Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies at George Washington University. He is a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London.
He has authored books, book chapters, and articles on U.S. and European security, NATO, transatlantic relations, civil-military relations, and democratization in Poland and Central Europe. He is a frequent media contributor and writes a regular column, “On Europe and Security,” for the American Interest. He is bilingual in English and Polish, fluent in Russian, and proficient in German and French.
