Biography

Svend-Erik Skaaning

Skaaning is professor in comparative politics at Aarhus University. His main research interests include comparative methodology and the conceptualization, measurement, and explanation of democracy and human rights. Besides being principal investigator of DEDERE, a research project on democratic deepening and regression, Skaaning is project manager of the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) project with special responsibilities for civil liberties. His publications include Requisites of Democracy(2011) and Democracy and Democratization in Comparative Perspective (2012). Skaaning has been visiting scholar at Stanford University (2006) and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2009). At Harvard he will be in residence from January to June 2014 to work on the conditions of democratic (in)stability in interwar Europe.
