Biography

Elizabeth Cross

Cross is a PhD student in modern european history at Harvard University concentrating on the French Revolution and eighteenth century intellectual and economic history. During the 2014 fall semester, she will be in France conducting her archival research, which has been funded by CLIR, SSRC, and CES. Her dissertation studies the history of the last French East India Company (1785–1793). By studying the history of the Company’s implantation in India and its contested political and financial history in metropolitan France, her research demonstrates the important role that France’s continued colonial presence in the Indian Ocean played in economic and diplomatic debates on the eve of and during the Revolution.
