Dzanic examines the expansion of French imperial power around the Mediterranean between 1792 and 1848. He is particularly interested in local responses to French empire-building in Italy, Spain, Croatia, Egypt, and Algeria, as well as the wider impact of those responses on the transformation of French imperial ideology. His other research interests include political theory, transnational movements, nationalism, and the role of religion within imperial frameworks.
