This workshop will center around two books by French sociologists Luc Boltanski and Arnaud Esquerre, Qu’est-ce que l’actualité politique? Evénements et opinions au XXIe siècle” (Gallimard 2022), and Enrichment: A Critique of Commodities (Gallimard 2017; Polity 2020). The first book assesses the process of politicization and the formation of public opinion in France, while the second book analyzes new forms of wealth production grounded in the creation of narratives concerning the value of collections of objects from the past. These books expand the theoretical agenda set by Boltanksi and his coauthors in a series of pathbreaking books, including The New Spirit of Capitalism (Verso 1999, with Eve Chiapello).
