The New Face of Germany: Gramsci, Neorealism & Hegemony

1991 – Simon Reich

Abstract

In this paper, Professors Markovits and Reich examine the position of a newly unified Germany within Europe and the world order. They explore and rejects the view that Germany poses and expansionist threat but argue that the structural power of the German economy and cultural influence based on close ties to Eastern Europe will give Germany a new form of hegemony within Europe as a whole. This paper provides a careful exploration of the bases for German power and a reformulation of the concepts of international relations that might be used to delineate that power.
