Biography

Stefan Beljean

Stefan Beljean is a Ph.D. student in sociology at Harvard University. His research examines the relationship between social stratification and the definition and evaluation of merit in society. In a recent study, Stefan has studied processes of evaluation in the cultural industry of stand-up comedy, and how the evaluation of stand-up comedians is shaped by the stratified social structure of this cultural field. His current research examines how evaluation processes in schools shape students’ life-chances and sense of worth. For this study, he is comparing students’ experiences in upper-middle-class high schools in the United States and Germany. Before coming to Harvard, Stefan earned a B.A. and M.A. in Sociology from the University of Konstanz, Germany, and spent a year as a visiting student at Yale University.
