Biography

Nicholas Attfield

Attfield is a British Academy postdoctoral fellow in the Faculty of Music, Oxford University. His DPhil, from Oxford, addressed the reception of Anton Bruckner\'s symphonies. He has previously done research in Berlin, Vienna, and at Princeton. His interests include German and Austrian symphonic music, opera, and politics from 1870-1945. At Harvard, he is pursuing research on a book project that focuses on the work of culturally conservative German musicians during the Weimar Republic. He argues that while often derided as unimaginative and reactionary rabble in contrast to their more famous left-leaning counterparts, these musicians can be shown to be highly modernist in their own right.
