Stein is studying politics of English trade in the Mediterranean in the seventeenth century, comparing the evolution of England's commercial and maritime presence in the Mediterranean and the development of its overseas empire. He is also especially interested in oceanic histories, the comparative study of empire, and questions of political economy.
