David Lipsey

Biography

Lipsey, 62, is a Labour member of the British House of Lords. His career includes a period of advisory to British Foreign Secretary Anthony Crosland and to Prime Minister James Callaghan. As a journalist, he was political editor (Bagehot) of The Economist, deputy editor of The Times, and editor of the social affairs weekly New Society. He was a member of the Labour government\'s Royal Commission on Long Term Care for the Elderly, of the Jenkins Committee on the electoral system, and of the Davies panel on the BBC. He is chair of the centrist think tank the Social Market Foundation and of the pressure group Straight Statistics. Academic appointments include visiting professorships at Ulster and Salford Universities and a visiting fellowship at LSE.
