Helbling is a senior researcher at the Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB) and holds a PhD in political science from the University of Zurich. His research fields include immigration and citizenship politics, nationalism, xenophobia/Islamophobia, and the accommodation of Islam and right-wing populism. His work has appeared in the European Journal of Political Research, Ethnic and Racial Studies, Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, West European Politics, and the Swiss Political Science Review, among others. He is currently editing a volume on \"Islamophobia in Western Europe and North America\" and co-authoring a book with H. Kriesi, E. Grande et al. on Restructuring Political Conflict in the Age of Globalization. He will be in residence at CES from February through May 2010.
