The “Jewish question,” which raises the issue of Jews’ relation to mainstream society, entered public discourse in Europe in the mid-19th century and is most often associated with antisemitism; but the question of assimilation and belonging has also been one that Jews have struggled with up to today, in Europe and elsewhere.
