The European Union (EU) and the African Union (AU) have
repeatedly expressed intentions to rekindle their partnership, yet their
engagements are often characterized as a 'dialogue of the deaf'. In this seminar,
Maurizio Carbone will discuss several controversial initiatives in the areas of
trade and investment, notably the African Continental Free Trade Area and the
EU’s Global Gateway Africa, and expose various clashes over human rights and
migration. Carbone will argue that to better understand the evolution of EU-AU
relations it is necessary to decenter the EU’s external action and recenter the
AU’s international agency.
