Germany's economic model has long served as an example for other European countries. In the post-pandemic world, small, open, export-oriented European economies are facing challenges by a world characterized by fragmentation of value chains, deep geopolitical tensions, and war. Is Europe witnessing the decline of the “German model"? Do current security challenges in Europe signal an end to the ability of “doux commerce” to promote the values of tolerance and cooperation?
