Mary D. Lewis will interview historian Megan Brown about her recent book, The Seventh Member State: Algeria, France, and the European Community (Harvard University Press, 2022). The discussion will explore how Algeria was integral to the formation of post-World War II European institutions such as the European Coal and Steel Community and the European Economic Community. Why did France insist that Algeria be included in the 1957 Treaty of Rome, and what happened to Algeria's rights, within that community, after decolonization in 1962?
