In his new book Capitalism in Chaos: How the Business Elites of Europe Prospered in the Era of the Great War(Cornell University Press, 2022), Máté Rigo's explores the impact of World War I on business life and traces the rise of “wartime millionaires,” who amassed their fortunes not despite, but because of, wartime destruction and the dissolution of empire. This seminar will discuss transnational history, the effects of the dissolution of empire on capitalism and the Great War’s significance for histories of globalization and deglobalization in the interwar period.
