This seminar examines early efforts to translate European economic ideas into Indian languages. Focusing on colonial Delhi in the 1830s and 1840s, Osama Siddiqui shows that debates over how to translate scientific concepts into the Urdu language shaped the reception of European economic thought and, ultimately, enabled the formation of a new vernacular science of economic and social life in India.
