This seminar will focus on the case study of Facebook vs. CasaPound where a civil court in Rome ruled that Facebook should reactivate the account of the Italian neo-fascist group CasaPound and pay damages. This case highlighted the conflicting relationship between content moderation strategies used by digital platforms and national laws on freedom of speech.
This case raises questions, including who should decide what political groups are dangerous and how to moderate their accounts and pages? What are the consequences of de-platforming? How can hate and violent speech be decreased online?
