In this presentation, Joan Llorach highlights the "we first" economic argument that was used by President Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign, the Leave campaign in the United Kingdom, and Catalan, Scottish and Venetian secessionists. According to Llorach, this “we first” economic message paradoxically ends up generating divisions within the very same “we” they seek to unite. This talk explores how the US fiscal structure helps prevent the kind of regional grievances that are usually present in European countries.
