Adorno writes in the Ästhetische Theorie: "The central part of aesthetics would be the salvation of the Schein, and the emphatic justification of art, the legitimation of its truth, depends on this salvation." The objective of this talk is to make what progress we can in understanding the Ästhetische Theorie by looking at this, evidently important, concept.
We are now approaching the 50th anniversary of Aesthetic Theory (first published posthumously in 1970), the final masterpiece of the philosopher and social theorist Theodor W. Adorno. This lecture contributes to the semester-long series of scholarly presentations that reflect on the legacy and actuality of this major work.
