The horrifying genius of Soviet communism – as conceived in the 1920s, perfected in the 1930s, then spread by force across Eastern Europe after 1945 – was the system’s ability to get so many skeptical people, in so many different kinds of countries and so many disparate cultures, to play along for so many years, with relatively little open protest – even in Poland.
