Javier Martínez-Cantó is the inaugural Ramón Areces Fellow.
The Ramón Areces Fellowship was established in 2023 at the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies (CES). This fellowship enables outstanding post-doctoral scholars who are Spanish citizens to be in residence at CES for one academic year to conduct research at Harvard University. Accepted candidates will join fellow Europe-focused scholars from around the world as part of the Center's Visiting Scholars Program.
The Ramón Areces Fellowship is made possible through a generous gift by the Ramón Areces Foundation. The Madrid-based foundation was established in 1976 to provide research and learning opportunities for Spanish citizens and to support initiatives that advance solutions to societal challenges in the realms of science, education, culture and economics.
CES invites applications from scholars of all social science disciplines (including history) whose work is related to modern Europe and who are citizens of Spain. Proposals focused on European integration, institution building, governance, and the history and contemporary conditions of democracy are particularly encouraged. Submissions will be assessed on the quality, originality, and significance of the proposed project, as well as the applicant’s record of achievement and promise for a career in academia and/or international institutions. The Ramón Areces Fellowship provides a generous stipend of $70,000 for 10 months of continuous residential research at CES from September to June.
This Ramón Areces Fellowship is administered by the Center, and each application is reviewed by the CES Steering Committee. Accepted fellows are expected to be in residence at CES from September 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027. As a member of the Center’s Visiting Scholars Program, fellows are required to attend the weekly New Research on Europe Seminar and give one presentation on their research for feedback from their peers.
