Biography

Melanie Amann

Melanie Amann has served as deputy editor-in-chief at DER SPIEGEL since 2023. She is a distinguished author at DER SPIEGEL since September 2025. Amann joined the publication in 2013 and became head of the Berlin office in 2019 before being appointed to the editorial board in 2021. Prior to DER SPIEGEL, Amann worked as a staff writer for Financial Times Deutschland, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, and Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung. Starting January 2026, Amann will join FUNKE Media Group as chief producer.

Amann will serve as a John F. Kennedy Memorial Policy Fellow at the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies (CES) throughout October 2025.

Amann studied law in Trier, Aix-en-Provence, and Berlin, and earned her doctorate at LMU Munich. From 2003 to 2004, she spent a year at the German School of Journalism in Munich.
