Joaquín Almunia served as European Commissioner for Competition from 2010 until November 2014. He has been affiliated with the European Commission since April 2004. Until February 2010, he served as Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs.
Almunia was involved in the Spanish government early on in his career, serving as a member of the Spanish Parliament (1979-2004), Minister of Employment and Social Security (1982-1986), Minister of Public Administration (1986-1991), Spokesperson of the Socialist Parliamentary Group (1994-1997), and leader of the PSOE (1997-2000). In 2000, he was the PSOE candidate for Prime Minister. He was also responsible for the research program “Equality and redistribution of income” at the Fundación Argentaria from 1991-1994, along with the direction and foundation of the progressive think tank “Laboratorio de Alternativas” in 2002.
