The COVID-19 pandemic triggered EU member states to suspend the application of the Stability and Growth Pact's (SGP) fiscal rules in March 2020. Last year, the EU Commission suggested to reform the SGP by adapting fiscal rules to specific member state challenges, but this proposal was met with strong resistance. Can EU member states find a solution before the unreformed SGP could be enacted again in 2024?
