Biography

Björn Bremer

Björn Bremer is an assistant professor of political science at Central European University (CEU). Previously, he was a senior researcher in comparative and international political economy at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies. His research lies at the intersection of comparative politics, political economy, and political behavior. Bremer is particularly interested in the politics of macroeconomic policies, welfare state politics, and the political consequences of economic crises. His first book, Austerity from the Left: Social Democratic Parties in the Shadows of the Great Recession, was published by Oxford University Press in 2023.

At the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies (CES), Bremer will work on a project that analyzes how the lack of public investment has become one of the most acute economic problems in advanced economies. Specifically, the project aims to uncover why many governments fail to invest and to explore the political effects of this unequal investment.

Bremer obtained his Ph.D. in political science from the European University Institute (EUI) and holds a B.A. in philosophy, politics, and economics from the University of Oxford and an M.A. in international relations and international economics from the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University.

This information is accurate for the time period that the visiting scholar is affiliated with CES.
