Biography

Christopher Schmidt-Nowara

Schmidt-Nowara is Professor of History and Prince of Asturias Chair in Spanish Culture & Civilization at Tufts University. His research concentrates on two broad areas: the history of slavery and emancipation in the Hispanic world; and the history of politics and ideas in the Spanish empire, especially during the imperial crises of the nineteenth century. He is presently studying the era of Spain's War of Independence and the Spanish American Revolutions. Schmidt-Nowara is the author of several works on the history of Spain and its overseas empire, including Empire and Antislavery (1999) and The Conquest of History (2006). He is also a scholar of slavery and emancipation in the Americas. He co-edited Slavery and Antislavery in Spain's Atlantic Empire (2013) and wrote Slavery, Freedom, and Abolition in Latin America and the Atlantic World (2011).
