Leonhard is full professor in modern European history at the University of Freiburg and director of the School of History at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS). He received both his PhD (1998) with a thesis on the semantics of liberalism in European comparison and his habilitation (2004) on war experiences and nation building in Europe and the US before 1914 from the University of Heidelberg. He has taught as fellow and tutor in modern history at Oxford University from 1998–2003 and as reader in history at Jena University in 2004–2005 before coming to Freiburg in 2006. He will be in residence for the academic year 2012–2013 to complete his monograph on “The First World War: European Crisis and Global Conflict.”
