Peter Niesen is professor of political theory and history of ideas at Technische Universität Darmstadt and a member of the Frankfurt-based research cluster on the formation of normative orders. His research interests lie in the limits to political liberty, both of speech and of association, in contemporary and in Enlightenment thought (Kant, Bentham). He is the author of Kants Theorie der Redefreiheit (2nd edition 2008) and \"Anti-extremism, Negative Republicanism, Civic Society: Three Paradigms for Banning Political Parties,\" German Law Journal (2002). While at CES, he will do research on post-militant democracy justifications for party ban provisions. Niesen will be based at CES from January through April 2010.
