Join us for the inaugural Václav Havel Lecture on Human Rights, Civil Society and Democracy with a keynote address by CES Senior Fellow Michael Ignatieff, rector emeritus and professor of history at Central European University (CEU). Ignatieff is the 2024 recipient of the Princess of Asturias Award in Social Science recognizing his academic and political dedication to defending “the values of freedom, human rights, tolerance and the safeguarding of institutions.” This keynote also marks the first event of the Center's Democracy and its Critics Initiative.

About

The Václav Havel Lecture on Human Rights, Civil Society and Democracy at the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies (CES) was made possible through a gift by the Sekyra Foundation. For more information, see here.

This event is part of the Democracy and its Critics Initiative which was launched by the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies (CES) in the fall of 2024 to focus on the history and contemporary shape of democracy in Europe and provide a platform for events, conferences, and research on these pressing issues.
