As the world faces multiple hotspots of instability, from Ukraine to the Middle East, but also in the Sahel, the Indo-Pacific, and the Horn of Africa, the international community expects Europe to exercise its role as a global actor and security provider.
The invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation has been a wake-up call for the European Union, but there is still a long way before the Union’s toolbox is fully developed.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal João Gomes Cravinho will discuss the importance of engaging on the internal and external dimensions that make defense a strategic imperative for Europe, but also for the U.S. and the transatlantic relationship.
Prior to becoming Foreign Minister, Cravinho previously held the posts of Minister of National Defense (2018-2022) and Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (2005-2011). He also served as EU Ambassador to India (2011-2015) and to Brazil (2015-2018).
