As Jean Monnet famously said, “Europe will be forged in crises…”. Indeed, over the last twelve years especially, Europe has faced more than its fair share of challenges wrought by the global financial crisis followed by the COVID-19 pandemic. These disruptions have in turn led to substantial institutional innovations, in particular in the fiscal and monetary policy domain.

As a longtime Director General for Economic and Financial Affairs, Marco Buti was right in the middle of this: conceiving policy responses, defending them in public debates, and drawing lessons from failures. In this seminar, Buti will share insights from his recent book, in which he documented this "European journey." The discussion will touch on Europe’s institutional learning process through these dual crises, as well as lessons to guide European economic policy in the future.
