Drawing on archival sources and memoirs from Russia and Austria, the speakers will review many aspects of the Soviet occupation of Austria from 1945 to 1955. Among the topics covered are the role of Soviet state security organs, the role of East-West espionage, Soviet occupation policies, the withdrawal of troops in 1955, and numerous features of social life, including sexual abuse of Austrian women by Soviet soldiers, arrests of Austrian citizens, mass deportations, and economic exploitation.
