Biography

Thomas Kühne

Kühne is Strassler Professor of Holocaust History at Clark University. Trained in Germany, he received his Ph.D. from University of Tübingen. He is currently working on a global history of modern body aesthetics. His book Belonging and Genocide. Hitler’s Community, 1918-1945 (2010) reveals how the longing for community changed an advanced civilian society into a genocidal society. Kühne’s awards include fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University. His first book on electoral culture and electoral reform in pre-1914 Prussia (1994) was awarded the German Bundestag Research Prize in Parliamentarism. His volume on men’s history in 1996 has established the field in Central Europe. His book Kameradschaft (2006) inquires into male bonding among German soldiers in the twentieth century.
