Senior Thesis Grant

CES offers summer research travel grants for senior thesis writers to explore topics on political, historical, economic, social, cultural, and intellectual trends in modern or contemporary Europe. The grants in the amount of $5,000 are made possible thanks to a generous endowment provided by the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen and Halbach Foundation in 1979 which established the Krupp Foundation Fellowships at CES. Grants must be used for research abroad during the summer break.

In preparation for working on a senior thesis, the Center also offers a series of workshops for juniors. Students must apply via the Harvard University Common Application for Research and Travel (CARAT). Please follow the CARAT instructions carefully as they include all requirements and submission instructions.

The deadline for applications is February 9, 2018.

Stanley H. Hoffmann Undergraduate Travel and Research Fund

The Stanley H. Hoffmann Undergraduate Travel and Research Fund was established to honor the life work of Professor Stanley H. Hoffmann, who served as the Paul and Catherine Buttenwieser University Professor and taught at Harvard University from 1955 until his retirement in 2013. The grant recognizes his innovative interdisciplinary studies of international relations and political thought and his devoted commitment to the liberal arts. Harvard College students are eligible for consideration, especially those applying to support activities related to completing a senior thesis, research-related travel, and internships in Europe. Students concentrating in social studies, government, history, literature, or French studies are preferred, but others are also eligible.

Students wishing to be considered for the Stanley H. Hoffmann Undergraduate Travel and Research Fund should specifically indicate this in the cover letter accompanying their research proposal or internship application. As with other grant programs, CES receives many more worthy requests for funding than it can provide, therefore students being considered for this grant should simultaneously seek and apply to other available sources of funding in order to maximize the opportunity to obtain the necessary support.
