The weakening of the so-called European social model has paved the way for the diffusion of social insecurity not only amongst the poorest but also in relevant parts of the European middle class. Drawing conceptual tools and part of the analytical framework from the recent American debate on the "squeeze of the middle class", the paper develops specific measures and methods that are able to capture the substance of this new phenomenon in Europe, and to clarify its distinctiveness in respect of more traditionally analysed phenomena of poverty and material deprivation.
