Ramón Areces Fellowship

The Ramón Areces Fellowship supports Spanish scholars whose research is in a social science discipline (including history) and related to modern Europe. Proposals focused on European integration, institution building, governance and the history and contemporary conditions of democracy are particularly encouraged. Submissions will be assessed on the quality, originality and significance of the proposed project, as well as the applicant’s record of achievement and promise for a career in academia and/or international institutions.

Candidates must fulfill the following requirements:

• Provide proof of Spanish citizenship.
• Prove fluency in English.
• Possess a Ph.D. at the time of application.
• Have completed a Ph.D. degree no more than eight years prior to the application and have a track record of academic publications.
• Commit to being in residence at CES for the academic year which commences in the autumn immediately following the application date (September 1 through June 30). Acceptances cannot be deferred.
• Recipients must be unencumbered by teaching and/or other academic responsibilities that impede their participation in the Center’s activities during the Fellowship
• Join CES Visiting Scholars Program and attend and participate in the required weekly New Research on Europe Seminar at CES and present their work in this series.

The Ramón Areces Fellowship provides a $65,000 stipend for a 10-month stay, one roundtrip economy class airline ticket to Boston, as well as funds to help defray some of the costs of childcare and health insurance.

Please review the application deadlines. The required materials for complete applications are listed below:

• Cover letter including interest and qualifications and dates of residence. Note: This Ramón Areces Fellowship is awarded for 10 months, September 1 through June 30.
• Current curriculum vitae, not to exceed five pages, with only the most important publications and achievements highlighted.
• Title and a three-page social science research proposal with focus on modern Europe to be carried out at CES.
• 150 word abstract of the research project.
• In the case of non-native English speakers: TOEFL scores or a brief, signed letter from the applicant attesting to fluency in spoken and written English.
• Three letters of recommendation are required. Note: Please be prepared to ask three referees to submit reference letters on your behalf via the online application portal.

Each application is reviewed by the CES Steering Committee, and applicants are notified of the results of the selection process by the early spring of each year.
